Moleskine Pen Holder

04 Jan 2009

To add to the many hacks already out there, here's my contribution relating to the age old question:

How do you carry your pen with your Moleskine?

My creative Mam has come up with the answer for me.

Nice hack. I usually have it between the pages together with the page-divider, which I wrap around the clip of my fountainpen… in that way chances are small I loose it.

What a great idea! Go Gnat Mumma!

Thanks for sharing your way Jan and for the kind words…

    Mamma-Gnat does rule, Lisa :-)

Nice! I’m another who just throws the pen between the pages.

Interesting solution. At first I thought this is another ugly duct tape solution but then I realized it’s elastic ribbon – nicely done! Thanks for sharing the how-to.

dude… duct tape, ugly it is not! “it’s like the force. it has a light side and a dark side and it holds the universe together.” :-]

and props to gnat-mom, this is great!

Wouldn’t it be still a bit simpler if just make the overlap part as the pocket? This would require only around 21+21+12=54 cm of elastic ribbon and get rid of that overlap bulge.

You’re very right Mika – version two is coming out in a couple of weeks with that exact plan – mama-gnat has already improved on her original design :-)

Great idea! I currently use one of the Bookslings ( http://everydayinnovations.com/catalog/BookSling-17-1.html ) for my moleskine – the issue with this is that the pen is only held through the loop up by the clip, and thus can bend almost perpendicular to the moleskine if the loop is twisted – this means when I toss the notebook in a bag, I end up catching the pen on stuff (USB cables, books, etc) when I try to pull out the notebook. Your elastic “pocket” is still pretty low profile but keeps the pen nice and snug.

Also, I have to avoid using pens with rubberized grips as they’re a pain to get in/out of the booksling loop – it pushes the entire booksling one way or another getting the pen in/out. An elastic pocket would put up similar resistance to the grip, but wouldn’t budge the elastic as long as you are gripping the notebook firmly to keep it from rotating around the cover! :-)

Thanks for taking the time to comment Ross – I’ve seen and tried the booksling method (with the page divider ribbon) and had the same issues… my Mams method ensures the pen stays flush plus it doesn’t matter what pen it is as well :-)
